Introducing the GTGUARD ClearView H215A and H215BL Thermal Monoculars

GTGUARD is expanding the ClearView lineup with two new thermal imaging monoculars built for anyone who spends time outdoors after the sun goes down: the H215A and the H215BL. Both are designed around the same idea — give you a clear, detailed view of your surroundings in complete darkness, without relying on any light source at all.

Whether you're scouting terrain before first light, watching wildlife move through a treeline, or simply want to see what's out there on a night hike, these two monoculars turn heat into a visible image in real time. Below, we'll walk through what they do, what makes them different from each other, and which one fits your needs.

What Is a Thermal Imaging Monocular?

Unlike night vision, which amplifies whatever small amount of light is already present, a thermal imaging monocular detects the heat that people, animals and objects naturally give off and converts it into a visible image. That means it works in conditions where night vision struggles or fails entirely — pitch-black nights, drifting smoke, fog, and heavy weather. There's no illuminator to give away your position, and no dependency on ambient light.

Both the H215A and H215BL are built around this principle, using the same sensor and optics to deliver a clear thermal picture in a compact, handheld body.

Core Specifications

Both models share an identical core spec sheet:

The one hardware difference between them is built directly into the H215BL: a laser distance measurement module. We'll cover that in detail below.

Product Features

256×192 Thermal Resolution with AI Enhancement

The 12µm VOx sensor captures 49,152 thermal data points per frame, and ≤45mK NETD means it's sensitive enough to distinguish fine temperature differences between a subject and its surroundings. On top of the raw sensor data, both models run AI Super Resolution and Digital Detail Enhancement (DDE) to sharpen edges and reduce noise in real time, along with automatic corrections — out-of-chip correction (OOC), shutter correction, non-uniformity correction (NUC), and auto gain control (AGC) — that keep the image consistent as conditions change.

Hotspot Tracking

Both units can automatically mark the hottest point in the frame with an on-screen cursor, helping you pick out the most likely subject at a glance without scanning the whole image manually.

Picture-in-Picture and Digital Zoom

A picture-in-picture window lets you magnify a specific area of the frame while keeping the full scene visible, and 1–8× digital zoom is adjustable with a single button press — useful for confirming detail at a distance without losing situational awareness.

Attitude Display

Powered by the built-in 3-axis gyroscope, accelerometer and electronic compass, both models display your horizontal angle, pitch angle and compass heading live on screen — helpful for staying oriented in unfamiliar terrain or at night when visual landmarks are harder to judge.

5 Color Palettes, 6 Scene Modes

Switch between White Hot, Black Hot, Red Hot, Iron Red and Green Hot color palettes, and match the image to your environment with six scene modes: Normal, Outline, City, Forest, Rainforest and Bird Watching. Brightness, contrast and sharpness are each adjustable across five levels.

Rugged, Field-Ready Build

Both monoculars are IP65 rated against dust and water jets, and operate across a -20°C to 60°C range, so cold mornings and hot summer nights are both within spec. An anti-burn sensor protection feature helps guard the detector when pointed at very hot heat sources.

All-Day Battery and On-Device Storage

A 4000mAh battery delivers up to 10 hours of use per charge, with auto power-off (1/3/5/10 minutes of inactivity) to conserve battery between uses. Photos and video save directly to 32GB of internal storage, and Wi-Fi connectivity lets you transfer and export files without needing a cable.

Applicable Scenarios

Both the H215A and H215BL are built for a range of outdoor situations where visibility after dark matters:

  • Night Hiking and Camping: Spot trail hazards, wildlife, or movement around a campsite well before you'd see it with the naked eye.
  • Wildlife Observation and Photography: Watch nocturnal animals without disturbing them, since thermal imaging doesn't require any illumination that could alert or scare off a subject.
  • Scouting and Terrain Assessment: Survey open ground, tree lines and terrain features from a distance before moving through them, whether for planning a route or checking activity in an area.
  • Cave and Dark-Environment Exploration: See clearly in spaces with no ambient light at all, where traditional night vision has nothing to amplify.
  • Property and Land Checks: Walk or survey your property at night with a clear view of your surroundings.
  • Search and Rescue Assistance: Locate people or animals by their heat signature in low-visibility conditions, such as fog, smoke, or after dark.

Because thermal imaging works independently of ambient light, all of these scenarios benefit equally from either model — the difference comes down to whether you also need to know exact distance, which is where the H215BL comes in.

The Difference Between the H215A and H215BL

The H215A and H215BL share the same sensor, lens, battery, storage, and full feature set described above. There is exactly one functional difference between them: the H215BL adds a built-in laser distance measurement module, rated up to 600 meters with ±1 meter accuracy, operated through a dedicated fifth button on the housing (the H215A has four buttons; the H215BL has five).

The H215BL offers two ranging modes:

  • Single-shot mode for an instant, one-time distance reading
  • Continuous mode for a live, updating distance reading as your subject moves

The H215BL also includes CVBS analog video output (toggled via a Mode + Capture button combination), letting you send a live video feed to an external display or recording device — a feature the H215A does not have.

Physically, the two units are close in size but not identical: the H215A measures 188 × 52 × 56.5mm, while the H215BL measures 185 × 50 × 62mm — slightly shorter and narrower, but noticeably thicker to accommodate the ranging module.

In short: if distance to your subject matters to how you use the device, the H215BL is the better fit. If you mainly want clear thermal detection without needing an exact distance reading, the H215A delivers the same image quality for $60 less.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the main difference between the H215A and H215BL?
The H215BL adds a built-in laser distance measurement module (up to 600m, ±1m accuracy) and CVBS video output. Everything else — sensor, lens, battery, storage and smart features — is identical between the two models.

Do I need distance measurement for wildlife observation or night hiking?
Not necessarily. Both models detect and display heat signatures identically. Distance measurement becomes valuable when you need a precise number rather than a visual estimate — for example, confirming exactly how far away a subject is.

Is either model waterproof?
Both carry an IP65 rating, meaning they're dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets from any direction. Neither is designed for submersion.

How long does the battery last?
Both are rated for up to 10 hours per charge from the same 4000mAh battery. Actual runtime depends on temperature, screen brightness, and Wi-Fi use.

Can I record video and take photos?
Yes, both models support photo capture and video recording to 32GB of internal storage, with files deletable or exportable via Wi-Fi or USB Type-C.

Final Thoughts

The H215A and H215BL both deliver the same core thermal imaging experience: a 256×192 sensor, F/1.0 lens, AI-enhanced image processing, all-day battery life and a rugged, IP65-rated build. The choice between them comes down to one question — do you need to know the exact distance to what you're observing? If so, the H215BL's built-in distance measurement makes that decision easy. If not, the H215A offers the same image quality and features for less.
